A community where you choose the people you live beside, own your home instead of renting it, and help design the place itself — so that no one has to live, or grow old, in isolation.
We choose almost everything in modern life — our work, our phone, where we go on holiday — except the things that shape us most: who lives next door, whether we can afford a home, and whether we have any say over the place we spend our days. We're left to find a box we can just about pay for, among strangers, in a town run by people who'll never know we existed.
It doesn't have to be built this way. Belonging is a community designed around the things that actually make a life good: people you chose, a home that's truly yours, work that means something, and a real hand in shaping where you live.
So Belonging is designed against each of them — turning on its members, being captured from inside, ageing out, hardening into a creed, exposing the vulnerable, running out of money. Six design principles, grounded in real research and real communities, make up the backbone the whole vision stands on.
Read “What makes it last” →If you've spent too long isolated, or among people you didn't choose, paying rent toward someone else's future with little say over your own — this was written for you. You're not the only one, and it isn't only your fault. It's how the place was built. This is a different way to build it.
Belonging is partly a not-for-profit venture: it aims to do real good and return investors' capital, by creating value in land, homes, work, and community. The plan is to find affordable land, build starter homes people can own, and grow a place worth migrating to. Read the design, or get in touch.
This site grew from a book of ideas, developed further with AI working from established research and real-world models — then checked, shaped, and owned by the people who'll actually live them. The thinking is offered openly; the choices remain ours. Some of it is still a work in progress.
