Review
The purest test of the anti-ownership idea, and its slow decay is the verdict: removing ownership also removed responsibility, and the open-door principle left the community with no way to keep out people who came to exploit it. The kids left for the city anyway. Beautiful, sad, and the perfect opening story — a utopia that failed not with a bang but with a quiet cookhouse.

The inverse control group for every planned utopia on this list: zero design, and yet water pipes, postal routes, rooftop schools and hundreds of unlicensed dentists all functioned. The strongest evidence that order emerges without planners — and, in the same breath, the strongest evidence you wouldn't want to live in what emerges. Horrifying and miraculous at once; footage and photos are plentiful.
A colony founded 1887 by Nietzsche's sister and her antisemitic husband to establish a "pure" German settlement in the jungle.
Why
Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche and her antisemite husband set out to breed a 'pure' Aryan Germany in the Paraguayan jungle. Nietzsche despised it; the jungle and intermarriage defeated it.
Status
Failed almost immediately (the founder took poison); descendants remain, mostly intermarried with Paraguayans.

History's tidiest irony: the racist utopia was defeated by its own premise. The land resisted, the crops failed, the founder killed himself — and survival required exactly the intermarriage the colony was created to prevent. The descendants living happily as ordinary Paraguayans are the complete refutation, written in genealogy. Ideology met jungle; jungle won.

Genuinely international, genuinely durable — and genuinely stuck at 6% of the 50,000 residents it was designed for. The city "beyond money" quietly runs on money, and the community "beyond nations" is discovering it exists inside one, as the government struggle shows. Still, half a century of people from sixty countries actually living together is not nothing. A utopia in permanent beta.

Noyes preached that perfection was possible now — so sin's institutions had to go, including marriage, replaced by 'complex marriage' of every member to every member.

Review
Thirty years of the most radical social experiment in American history, held together entirely by one man's theology — and dissolved within years of his decline. Communes that abolish the family need something stronger than the family to replace it, and charisma has a lifespan. That it ended as a cutlery brand is the darkly funny footnote: the commune died, the company thrived. Capitalism got the last word.

Ford needed rubber but wanted more: to export Michigan itself — square dances, prohibition, punch-clocks — into the Amazon. The jungle and the workers both revolted.

Abandoned by Ford in 1945; a small Brazilian town lives among the ruins.
Review
Failure on every axis at once: botanical (rubber monoculture invited blight the plantation never beat), social (workers rioted over the food and the timeclocks), and personal (Ford never once visited). The fantasy that you can control people like production lines met the jungle and lost. The ruins in the rainforest are the best visual metaphor available for the whole "controlled utopia" category.
A massive prehistoric settlement of up to 10,000 people where streets were completely banned. To enforce total social equality and prevent hierarchies from forming, all mud-brick houses were identical, shared walls, and were accessed exclusively via ladders through the roofs. Skeletal remains show no evidence of violent warfare over its 2,000-year history.

Review
The rarest and saddest category in the file: a utopia that worked and was killed anyway. Riace's threat was never its failure — it was its example, arriving at the wrong political moment. Most entries here defeated themselves; this one was defeated. Include it so the video doesn't accidentally teach that good ideas fail only on their own merits.
A massive, hidden kingdom of over 30,000 escaped African slaves deep in the Brazilian jungle. They constructed a network of fortified, walled villages that developed a unique, syncretic Afro-Brazilian legal system, distributed land communally, and successfully repelled dozens of Portuguese and Dutch military expeditions.

Why

Review
The terminus of the pattern, and it must be handled with the gravity it deserves: most victims were idealists who joined for racial equality and social justice, and many did not die willingly. The recipe was not exotic — isolation, one charismatic leader, no exit, escalating loyalty tests. Every community in this file can be measured by its distance from those four ingredients. That is Jonestown's only useful legacy.
A legendary, fortified colony built entirely off-grid by international pirates. Operating on an explicit written text code, they abolished all national identities, created a common treasury, freed all captured slaves, and invented an egalitarian language specifically to run a cross-racial, anti-monarchical democracy on the water.

Soleri's theory that sprawl is civilisation's disease: compress the city into one dense organism — an 'arcology' — and hand-build the prototype in the desert.
Status
Active but tiny — ~80 residents against the 5,000 planned; more education centre than city.
Review
Soleri's diagnosis of sprawl was right decades early, and the buildings are beautiful. But 80 residents after 55 years is a verdict: an idea, however correct, isn't a reason to move to the desert. Cities need jobs, schools and dentists before they need philosophy. Ironically, Whittier, Alaska (#36) achieved his arcology by accident — with weather instead of theory.
When Pope Eugene IV sold territory to the Republic of Florence, a mapping error left a tiny 2-kilometre strip of land completely unmentioned in the treaty. Realizing they were legally invisible, the 250 residents declared themselves an independent republic. They banned all taxes, judicial systems, and armies, operating a hyper-profitable, lawless free-trade zone and tobacco-growing capital for nearly 400 years.

The heavily structured communal settlement of the Essenes. Fleeing what they saw as the corruption of Jerusalem, roughly 4,000 communards shared their homes, meals, and labor in the desert.
